About

Rhian Tutson in a black beaded gown

Hello, and welcome. I am Rhian, the R. A. behind R. A. Tutson, in case the initials left you curious.

I grew up in Arlington, right here in Jacksonville, and I still live in the same house. My parents came to the United States from Jamaica, so I watched up close what it takes to build a life from scratch. I am married, and between my husband and me we have four children, which keeps our house busy and loud.

My résumé reflects a career that has taken several different turns. I served as a Florida Highway Patrol trooper for five and a half years and worked traffic homicide cases during that time. After that I worked in mortgages and staffing, then investigated child welfare cases for the Department of Children and Families, and today I investigate misconduct cases in public education. I also serve on the board of the Jacksonville Housing and Community Development Corporation, and I chair Government and Policy for the Jacksonville Affordable Neighborhood Land Trust Advisory Board.

My education includes a dual bachelor's degree, a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of North Florida, and a minor in anthropology. A PhD in forensic psychology is the next goal on my list, because apparently I enjoy a challenge.

The Fourth Floor grew out of the hardest period of my life. After my daughter was born, I experienced postpartum depression, followed by a second hemorrhage that nearly took my life. I survived and wrote the book, which is the first in the Scarred Systems trilogy, and I am now working on Book Two, Fruit of the Poisonous Tree.

Outside of writing, I run Florida Forward Together, a website where I explain how voting and government work and share where I stand on the issues. I would be glad to have you stop by.
